​Audition information 2023/24

for new and returning students from grade 4 through 12.

Solo music which best demonstrates the student's technical

and musical ability.

SIGHT READING

All candidates will be asked to sight-read passages that contain skill expectations appropriate to each of the five orchestra levels. After a first run-through of the solo passages and/or sight-reading music, the auditioner(s) may request a second attempt, possibly including a request to concentrate on a particular technical element.

HEADSHOT

You'll be asked to upload a photo with your registration form.

NYS membership and placement are by audition only. Auditions are judged by the conductors, to ensure correct placement according to individual ability. Both new and returning members audition in the fall for the upcoming concert season. Auditions will be held in-person at Norwalk City Hall.

AUDITION DATES

Auditions for the 2024-25 season will be held August 24 - September 4, 2024 at Norwalk Concert Hall, located at 125 East Avenue in Norwalk. Dates for specific instruments are as follows:

Violin - Saturday, Aug 28, 2024 & Monday, Aug 26, 2024

Cello - Tuesday, Aug 27, 2024

Viola/Bass/Harp - Wednesday, Aug 28, 2024

Woodwinds - Thursday, Aug 29, 2024

Brass/Percussion - Tuesday, Sep 3, 2024

After completing the online registration, you will receive an email confirmation within 24 hours. Audition times will be mailed to registered students in early August. Additional info on audition requirements, and what to expect at the audition, can be viewed here.

TUITION/FEES/FINANCIAL AID

There is a $35 non-refundable registration fee, which is paid when you register online.

NYS offers financial aid and merit scholarships to those that qualify. Detailed information on our tuition, fees, financial aid, and merit scholarships for 2023-2024 can be viewed here

SCHOOL PARTICIPATION and PRIVATE STUDY

NYS members are expected to participate and remain in good standing in their school’s instrumental programs, where they exist. Conflicts that prevent participation should be brought to the attention of the Executive Director. Good standing is determined by the school program. Members are also required to have private music lessons on their orchestral instrument. Additional NYS policies and procedures can be viewed here

PARTICIPATION

NYS members are expected to participate and remain in good standing in their school’s instrumental programs, where they exist. More info here

PRIVATE STUDY

It is expected that all members will pursue private study on their orchestral instruments. Limited scholarship assistance for private lessons is available.

ATTENDANCE

Students are allowed a maximum of two absences during each concert rehearsal period. Please note that there are mandatory rehearsals for each concert period. Concert attendance is mandatory.
