Membership and Auditions

MEMBERSHIP:

Membership Policy
Membership is by audition only. Each player is auditioned every year in September by the conductors to ensure correct placement according to individual ability.

To preserve orchestral integrity, musicians who (i) audition and do not accept their assigned orchestral placement, or (ii) withdraw during the year, or (iii) fail to participate in a concert or (iv) are dismissed during the year, may be suspended from NYS for that orchestral year and be barred from re-auditioning in the orchestral year following the year of such non-acceptance, withdrawal, failure to participate, or dismissal. The above situations shall be referred to the Executive Committee of the NYS for an investigation and for the imposing of the full or lesser sanctions. With respect to the imposition of the sanction for non-acceptance, withdrawal, failure to participate in a concert, or dismissal, the Executive Committee may take into consideration the following:

  • The reason behind the non-acceptance, withdrawal, failure to participate or dismissal
  • The extent of each of the musician's and his/her parents control over the events in question
  • The attendance record of the musician for rehearsals
  • The longevity of the musician with the NYS
  • The views of the musician's Conductor
  • Other factors that the Executive Committee considers to be of relevance
School Participation Policy
It is Norwalk Youth Symphony policy that all students are expected to be in good standing with the instrumental music program in their schools. Students who are not in good standing may be denied admission to the Norwalk Youth Symphony. After consultation with the School Liaison Committee* and the Executive Director, the Executive Committee will make final decisions regarding admission to the Norwalk Youth Symphony.
The policy will be implemented by the Board of Directors. The procedure will be as follows:

  1. The policy will be publicized to all constituencies, including students, parents, schools, and private teachers.
  2. Information regarding school participation will be elicited from students at the time of auditions. Students will be expected to indicate the manner of their participation.
  3. A letter will be sent to schools informing them of their students’ participation in the Norwalk Youth Symphony. Schools must notify the Executive Director of any student not in good standing with the school music program.
  4. Schools will be contacted by the Executive Director, a member of the Executive Committee, or a member of the School Liaison Committee in the event of a problem or conflict regarding school participation.
  5. The student and/or parents may be asked to appear before the School Liaison Committee to explain the circumstances surrounding the non-participation.
  6. Action will be taken in all unresolved cases. This action may include denial of participation in the Norwalk Youth Symphony.

*Includes school music teachers
