Our core program consists of 6 tiered orchestras.

  • Principal Orchestra is a full orchestra performing advanced repertoire.
  • Concert Orchestra is a full orchestra performing at an intermediate level.
  • Philharmonia String Orchestra is a mid-level string orchestra providing a transition to Concert Orchestra.
  • Philharmonia Orchestral Winds is a wind ensemble providing specific training to wind, brass, and percussion players.
  • Prelude Orchestra is an entry-level orchestra for string players.
  • Junior Strings provides an introduction to ensemble play.

NYS members can also participate in enrichment programs to enhance their training and provide additional performance opportunities.

  • The Small Ensembles Program provides string and wind players of all levels an opportunity to learn and perform chamber music. The Small Ensembles Program is under the direction of Chamber Music Central

Membership and placement in Principal, Concert, Philharmonia Strings and Winds, Prelude and Jr. Strings is by audition only.

Each player, including a returning musician from the previous year, is auditioned every year by the conductors in late August and the beginning of September to ensure correct placement according to individual ability.

All ensembles rehearse at:

Norwalk Concert Hall at City Hall
125 East Avenue
Norwalk, CT 06851

Principal, Concert, Philharmonia, Prelude and Jr. Strings rehearse on Sunday afternoons.

The Small Ensembles are coached on Sunday either before or after the regularly scheduled orchestra rehearsal.

The NYS season runs from September to May.

The orchestras perform in 3 concerts at Norwalk Concert Hall during the season.

Small Ensembles perform prior to the regular concerts and in recitals during the year.

On a rotating basis, Principal and Concert Orchestras perform in renowned concert venues such as Carnegie Hall and Tanglewood, and also on international tours.
